Our Rough Script/Outline for our radio show….

Hello everyone, and welcome to our radio show! Today we want to dive into performance poetry, specifically looking at Patricia Smith’s work titled, “Skinhead.” We will began by providing a little overview on the history of performance poetry and what makes performance poetry so powerful. Some would even say it is more powerful than music. Smith has written over ten books and is still far one of the most famous and intellectual performers to dare. Much of work is based around the fact of inequality and race amongst society.

What we want you guys to take away from our podcast today is how the author uses their performance to create a personal experience for the audience. In some ways today, we hope to show you how performance poetry is oftentimes more powerful than music! We chose to dive into the work done by Patricia Smith, specifically Skinhead because of the emotion behind the poem being preformed. Smiths work is strongly politically charged which adds passion and makes her piece very powerful because of the history and pain African Americans like herself. But what is so powerful about her piece and performance is that it is spoken through the eyes of a white supremacist.Smith creates a two diminutional storyline by being the poet who is at odds with the character she speaks through. She is scorned by the character she plays which allows her to create such passion with her words and performance on stage that otherwise wouldn't have played the same effect.
